When summer temperatures rise, most drivers think about engine overheating or A/C performance—but your tires are just as vulnerable. In fact, tire-related issues are one of the top causes of roadside breakdowns during the summer.
Understanding how heat affects your tires—and how to stay ahead of it—can keep you safer, improve fuel efficiency, and extend the life of your tires.
As the air temperature rises, so does the air pressure inside your tires. That’s because heat causes air to expand.
On the other hand, underinflated tires (which often result from pressure loss overnight or inaccurate checks) generate more friction, which adds even more heat. This wears tires faster and increases your chances of failure on the road.

All of this adds stress to your tire tread, especially if it’s already worn down. Bald or unevenly worn tires can’t properly grip hot pavement, increasing the risk of skidding, blowouts, and poor braking performance.
Use a reliable gauge and check when tires are “cold”—before you drive. Compare against your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended PSI (usually found inside the driver’s door).
